New National Board Certification Program Announced

Curriculum is port of national effort to strengthen teaching standards

National University is introducing a new program titled "National Board Certification for Teachers," according to Gloria Johnston, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Education.  The program will be offered throughout California, as well as in other locales throughout the country, she said.

National Board Certification is a voluntary process, requiring a rigorous performance-based assessment that can take from one to three years to complete. Once achieved, it is considered a mark of teaching excellence.  This year's California recipients include National University alumni from 19 school districts.

Twenty-nine National University alumni were identified among the 298 California teachers who achieved National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) in 2005. Those who earned a degree or credential at National University constituted 10 percent of the statewide total. Six more California NBCTs named last year were National University students.
