Nominations Open for the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence

Deadline: January 31, 2005

Biotechnology company Amgen has announced a call for nominations for its 14th Annual Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence. The award is designed to recognize and honor extraordinary K-12 science teachers, in communities where Amgen operates, who significantly impact their students through exemplary science teaching and who achieve demonstrated results in student learning.

This year, Amgen will honor a total of nineteen teachers in California, Colorado, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Washington, and Puerto Rico.

The fifteen winners from within the United States will receive an unrestricted cash award of $5,000 and a $5,000 cash grant to the recipient's school for the expansion or enhancement of a school science program, science resources, and the professional development of the school's science teachers. In Puerto Rico, four teachers will be honored, each receiving an unrestricted cash award of $2,500 and a restricted $2,500 cash grant.

Nominees for the award must be full-time classroom teachers, in a public or private-school setting, whose major responsibilities include teaching science and who have at least three years' experience teaching science to K-12 students. In addition, all applicants must be nominated by someone else; self-nominations will not be accepted.

Those interested in nominating an outstanding teacher should visit the Amgen Web site for complete program information.
