A New Year, a New Beginning

by Leia Bell

People make all types of resolutions to begin the New Year: establish new relationships, lose weight, stop smoking, get out of debt, etc.  This is also the time of year when a lot of people start thinking about their current jobs and making changes to improve their situation.

According to Gregg Simmons, Manager of the Career and Assessment Center (CAC) at National University, now is a common time of the year to want to make changes that will lead to a better job.  When asked what advice he would give to National alumni who are unhappy with their jobs, Mr. Simmons responded that it doesn't matter if you are a recent grad or an alum with 20 years of experience, it's never too late to achieve career satisfaction.

He said that most working adults don't like their jobs and would prefer to be doing something different – in fact, of all the working adults in the U.S., less than eight percent of them love what they do.  If you're not sure if you fall into this category, just ask yourself: if you did not need the compensation you receive from your job, would you still do it?

If you're not part of the "elite eight" percent, there are steps you can take to move yourself closer to career satisfaction.  First, try writing down your career goals and what you like about your current situation.  Next, identify the steps you need to take to move toward these goals.  Sometimes looking at the journey on paper may help you realize your career or employment dreams aren't that far away.

Remember, you can always contact a career counselor at the CAC to assist you with your career or employment-related questions.  Another new year has begun and it's never too late to move toward happiness.  You can either make the move now and be closer to your goals by this time next year, or you can be in the same situation next year.  What are you waiting for?

Happy New Year!
