MS degree to be offered in Knowledge Management

New curriculum will prepare information resource managers

The School of Business and Management is introducing a Master of Science in Knowledge Management program which will educate graduate business students to get the right information to the right individuals via a series of practices and processes that may very well separate innovators from struggling companies within an increasingly competitive market place.

Classes for the new program will begin in the summer of 2007, and will be available online and in academic centers throughout California, according to Lead Faculty Member Gary Parks, Ed.D.

According to Dr. Parks, companies operating within today's information-driven economy uncover most of their opportunities and ultimately derive greater value from intellectual rather than physical assets. To succeed, those assets must be continually honed as data is condensed into information, knowledge and ultimately wisdom.

"Knowledge management is not one single discipline, but an integration of numerous methods, practices and technologies," said Dr. Parks, adding that those who possess a scholarly understanding and mastery of knowledge management will "assure sustained competitive advantages."

The emergence of knowledge management has generated new organizational roles and responsibilities within organizations, including positions such as Chief Knowledge Officer. According to Fast Company.com, all companies need a chief knowledge officer, "someone who provides honest, unbiased intelligence about the world around a company and where the company stands in that world."

National University's new program will focus on the study of tacit and explicit knowledge and learning management tools to support decision making by harnessing the collective expertise within an organization, optimally routing the flow of input, innovation and creativity, and ultimately fostering a consensus on vital courses of action.
