A History of The College of Letters & Sciences
Alumni from the College of Letters and Sciences (COLS) are a diverse audience, represented by four departments and 19 degree programs. The College is a young institution, not quite two years old.
Many alumni may still be unaware of their affiliations with COLS. If your ties to the College of Letters and Sciences come as a surprise, please read the following:
Two years ago National University reorganized its liberal arts curricula, creating this college and two new schools. The reorganization reflected a commitment to expand discipline-specific undergraduate and graduate degrees in the liberal arts in response to broad regional demands for educated professionals.
Consequently, the former School of Arts and Sciences became the College of Letters and Sciences. It retained the psychology department. The department of mathematics, sciences and humanities was split into the department of math and science and the department of humanities, and a department of social sciences was added.
The former department of nursing became the foundation for National University's new School of Health and Human Services, which then added the departments of community health and health care administration.
The former department of writing and communication became the new School of Media and Communication, retaining degree programs in multimedia arts, video gaming, creative writing and digital cinema, while expanding curricula to serve growth in journalism, Internet publishing and broadcasting, as well as producing, directing and public relations.
