COLS Class Notes

Stephanie Thal (BA, Behavioral Science, 1989/MA, Counseling Psychology, 1991) serves on the Ethics Committee for the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. She the Association's Past President and spent seven years serving on its board of directors. Ms. Thal also serves as an appointee to the Mental Health Planning Council for the State of California.

Mike DeRose (MA, Counseling Psychology, 2003) is the children's outpatient program supervisor at Sierra Vista Child and Family Services, a private non-profit agency in Modesto, California. He also serves as co-chair for the School Attendance Review Board in Modesto city schools and sits on the Child Welfare Advisory board for Stanislaus County. 

Angela Quinlan (BA, English, 2005) has been teaching 10th grade English in the San Bernardino County School District while she completes coursework for a single subject credential and Master of Education degree at National University. 

Araceli Cabarcas-Mimms (BA, Psychology, 1998) is the co-author of a workbook designed to address spousal/partner abuse, and is considered a national expert in domestic violence.  She currently maintains a private practice as a marriage family therapist, with offices in San Diego and Riverside Counties.

Sarah Tyler (BA, English, 2006) is pursuing a writing career while developing a non-profit organization called Project Possibility, which will serve youth at risk. The focus of her work will be to incorporate writing exercises to stimulate creative thinking and healing. In addition to Project Possibility, Ms. Tyler is writing a novel and working on free-lance articles for various publications.

Shannan Brown (MA, Counseling Psychology, 2003) is Clinical Program Manager for the Wraparound and Therapeutic Behavioral Services departments at Stanford Home for Children in North Highlands, California. Stanford Home provides a wide variety of community-based, family-centered services for approximately 300 children and their families annually.

Marilyn Olson (BA, Psychology, 1997/MA, Counseling Psychology, 1998) is a chemical dependency counselor, working in the residential day treatment program at the Betty Ford Center.  She specializes in addictions, trauma, grief and spirituality, utilizing creative expression to facilitate growth and healing.

Denisse Roldan-Newell (BA, English, 2005) is a state lobbyist for the American Heart & Stroke Association of Nevada, which is based in Las Vegas. She regularly educates key local, state and federal officials on health policy issues affecting Nevadans, including heart disease and stroke, childhood obesity trends, tobacco control and emergency medical response systems.

Kathaleen Reed (BA, English, 2002)  applied to and was accepted by the University of Missouri, Columbia, Department of Communication, where she recently completed her first semester as a doctoral student and graduate teaching assistant.

Mathew K. Vang (MA, Counseling Psychology, 2000) works at Alta California Regional Center; a non-profit organization that provides services to people with mental and physical disabilities. His wife, Suzie, is currently attending National University to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.

In addition to working for the United States Air Force as a social worker, Kathy Rachelle Roliegh (BA, Behavioral Science, 1991) also started her own non-profit business, Brilliant Eyes Inc., which provides food baskets to more than 350 families and distributes more than 1,500 toys each year during Thanksgiving and for Christmas.
