SOBM Introduces New Project Management Concentration for BBA Students
The School of Business and Management (SOBM) is offering a new project management area of concentration for the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelor of Arts in business programs. Both will be offered online this spring.
Project management is a hot topic in business and industry right now, according to George Agrimis, associate faculty member in the department of management and marketing and lead faculty member for the program management concentration.
“With manufacturing moving overseas, we’re seeing more of a service economy in the United States,” said Agrimis. “Consequentially, companies are becoming more project-oriented.”
Instead of managing a workforce committed to permanent or ongoing operations, many companies are organizing their manpower around projects that have distinctive beginning and end points, Agrimis added. He compared the new organizational model to teams of professionals in the film industry who continually assemble and disband.
The defense industry is a good example of a sector that is turning to the Hollywood approach. So is the construction industry, as well as information technology, healthcare and local government agencies, according to Agrimis.
“Look at the major job listing sites, and you will see that all these industries are advertising for project management professionals,” said Agrimis. “It’s a much more dynamic approach, which involves new organizational thinking and requires a fresh mindset from managers.
The new project management concentration for BBA students helps them prepare for in-demand positions by keeping up with the latest trends in organizational management and illuminating the important and strategic shifts in the workplace.
