Faculty Profile: Dr. Terry L. Schmidt

Students enrolled in the School of Health and Human Services’ Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program will benefit from the experience and leadership of Dr. Terry L. Schmidt.

Dr. Schmidt is lead faculty for the MHA program, and plays a key role in preparing graduates for entry-level and middle-management roles in healthcare organizations. He arrived at National University in the fall of 2008 with the challenge of implementing new curricula that meet the current and future requirements of the region’s private and public healthcare institutions.

Originally from Washington, D.C., Dr. Schmidt brings a unique combination of management, public policy and academic credentials to his position. He has served as assistant director of the department of emergency medicine at Medical University of South Carolina; as assistant director for the American Medical Association’s department of government relations; and as adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Public Health at San Diego State University.

He holds professional memberships with the Medical Group Management Association and the American College of Medical Practice Executives; is a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA); and is a Certified Medical Practice Executive (CPME). His research interests are in physician reimbursement and healthcare reform, and his teaching focus is to provide students opportunities to meld academic training with real-life practical experiences.

Of special note are the acclaimed reviews given by students regarding Dr. Schmidt’s “White Coat” assignment, which takes his graduate students from the classroom into the healthcare arena for one-on-one shadowing and mentoring.

His stated passion is to make the curricula real and exciting for his students, enhancing their overall appreciation for healthcare management and delivering exceptional professionals into key leadership positions throughout the region.
