Indonesian Alumnus is Part Owner of the Philadelphia 76ers
Alumnus and Indonesian media mogul Erik Thohir (MBA, 1993) has become a major owner of international sports franchises.
Most notably, he is a minority owner of the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team in partnership with actor Will Smith, his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, private equity investor Joshua Harris, and others. They purchased the storied franchise (which has won three championships) for $280 million in 2011, and Thohir holds the distinction of being the first ever Asian owner of an NBA team.
Described as “one of the richest men in Jakarta,” Thohir’s media holdings consist of several radio stations, three television channels, sports magazines, advertising and online publishing companies, and the Indonesian daily newspaper Republika.
Thohir is currently president of the Southeast Asia Basketball Association, a professional league that includes teams in ten nations, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. He was formerly President of the Indonesian Basketball Association , and is also owner of two Indonesian basketball teams: Satria Muda BritAma Jakarta and Indonesia Warriors.
Additionally, Thohir recently purchased a controlling interest in Inter Milan, a professional soccer team in Italy. According to Forbes magazine, he assumed a 70 percent stake in the team for a reported 250 million Euros.
