Alumnus Named "California Small Business Person of the Year"

Alumnus Michael Jason Ianni (BBA, 2000), president of M Bar C Construction in San Marcos, was presented by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) with the California Small Business Person of the Year award earlier this summer.

Ianni was honored at the annual Annual Small Business Awards Luncheon & Conference, sponsored by SBA and the San Diego and Imperial Small Business Development Centers Regional Network  in San Diego on June 12.  As the statewide winner, he advanced as California representative for the national Small Business Person of the Year title.

A first generation Italian American and Southern California native, Ianni grew up in North San Diego County. He joined M Bar C Carports as a field laborer just out of high school, building carports and canopies for his future father-in-law. In the early 2000’s, he became an officer of M Bar C Carports. In 2005, the National University alumnus passed the California Contractors License Board exam and started his own company.

Ianni then formed his own LLC, Bella Angel Properties, named after his two daughters, Bella and Angel. In 2012, Bella Angel, with the assistance of SBA’s 504 loan program, purchased a 22,565 square foot building that is the new home for M Bar C Construction. At the same time, Jason formed two additional companies, ABS Equipment Leasing and iForce Building Products, which also share the new location purchased by Bella Angel Properties.

M Bar C Construction is the leader in solar carports and canopies, arising out of M Bar C Carports, with a 30-year history of specializing in carports and industrial canopies. A family owned and operated business, it started with two employees and now has more than 75 full-time, non-seasonal employees working in four states.

Over the past three years, M Bar C Construction has grown by more than 550 percent by creating a niche for itself in the solar industry. Rather than expanding into full solar integrators, Ianni's company instead perfected its product and obtained a pre-approved design by the Division of the State Architect (DSA), which propelled M Bar C above its competition. The pre-approved DSA design cut approval times for customers from months of costly reviews and revisions, to an over-the-counter solution.

“Michael “Jason” Ianni’s hard work and character have contributed to his success in business. His story is an example of a real American small business success story” said Ruben Garcia District Director, SBA San Diego District Office.
