Alumna Wins Seat on San Diego City Council

Alumna Myrtle Cole (BBA, 1987/MBA, 1990) was elected to the San Diego City Council’s District 4 seat on May 21.

She joins fellow alumna Marti Emerald on the nine-member Council, which serves as the legislative branch of government for the city of San Diego.

Cole was a patrol officer for two years with the Tucson Police Department, and served as a lieutenant with the San Diego Community College Police Department for eight-and-a-half years. Following a career in law enforcement, Cole went to work for San Diego City Councilman George Stevens, where she helped to implement Community Oriented Policing.

Most recently, Cole worked for United Domestic Workers as a labor advocate. She is a 2009 recipient of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. Award for community service, and a 2010 recipient of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s A. Philip Randolph Award for educational leadership.
