Fulbright Grant Awarded to COLS Faculty Member

Luis Acebal, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the College of Letters and Sciences (COLS),  has been awarded a Fulbright grant to teach literature and language at the Universidad Nacional del Litorial in Santa Fe, Argentina, in 2010.

Acebal teaches in the Department of Arts and Humanities in Redding, California. He is lead faculty for the Spanish language program at National University.

“Prof. Acebal is uniquely qualified to teach in our program,” said Prof. Liliana Paiz de Izaguirre, Dean of the School and Humanities and Sciences at the Universidad Nacional del Litorial. “We will be pleased to have him teach courses in American and multicultural literatures.”

“The Fulbright award is an opportunity to strengthen my connection to a country where I spent my early formative years,” Acebal said. “Those seminal years in Buenos Aires have become an integral part of how I view and define myself as an individual.”

The Fulbright teaching grant continues Prof. Acebal’s commitment to international education. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco and The Comoros Islands, he taught in and developed language and cultural programs. Since joining National University, he has continued his travels to other countries to learn more of their cultures and values.

“We are thrilled at the announcement of Prof. Acebal’s grant,” said Prof. Janet Baker, chair of the Department of Arts and Humanites. “It speaks of the academic depth of our program’s faculty.”

Professor Acebal is the second Fulbright recipient to Argentina from COL's Department of Arts and Humanities. Paul Majkut, Ph.D., was a Fulbright lecturer in graduate courses at the Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2003. He is a professor in San Diego.

Professors Majkut and Acebal have worked closely together as lecturers in Argentina and Uruguay. In 2005, Prof. Acebal lectured on literary realism to doctoral students at the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba, following Prof. Majkut’s lectures there on metafiction in 2003. In 2005, he and Majkut lectured on American fiction at the University of Montevideo in Uruguay. Professor Acebal’s upcoming Fulbright lectures follow Majkut’s lectures on the impact of media on literature at the Universidad Nacional del Litorial in 2009.

“Our scholarly and academic collaboration has been remarkable,” said Prof. Majkut. “Together, we have helped to define and encourage the study of American literature for students eager to know more of American culture.”
