Course Description
In this two-month course, prospective teachers of learners who are deaf or hard of hearing will acquire skills in qualitative and quantitative assessment. Students will learn to collect data through observational methods, as well as through traditional testing, to determine baseline cognitive and communicative abilities. Students will complete a comprehensive case study, a variety of screening projects which require "hands on" use of observational, formal and curriculum-based measures. Fundamental to the course are issues of cultural and linguistic diversity and the role of families in the assessment process. Students will apply Piagetian theory, along with a Multiple Intelligences framework, to identify cognitive and communicative strengths and needs in infants and school age children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
