Course Description
This course investigates the important methodologies and theories of history that buttress contemporary historical scholarship.  Along with a short introduction to historiography, the course focuses on the transformation of the historical profession in the last 150 years and examines the philosophical foundations of historical practice around the world today.  We will read historians who reflect critically on the historical assumptions and the framework of their interpretations.  In the process of reading these historians and accounts of changing historical practices, we will examine the major theoretical frames that powerfully influence contemporary historical scholarship and come to understand the exciting, innovative, and wide-ranging nature of historical scholarship today.
