Letter from the Provost

Dear Colleagues:

I would like to welcome you to the first edition of the National University Research Council Newsletter.  This important initiative has at least three very direct benefits to the faculty and university community. First and foremost, it provides an opportunity to showcase the exciting and dynamic nature of research at National University, and the accomplishments of our faculty.  I think this effort has intrinsic value: it reinforces our own views that describing National University as a teaching institution does not tell the entire story.  We can all be proud of our collective accomplishments.  Reviewing this document may also inspire junior faculty and lead to greater collaboration.  Second, it provides a view of the university not often seen by the community at large. While it is important that we recognize our accomplishments, it is also important that prospective students and their employers share this view.  As I write this, I have just returned from a meeting with an organization that represents over 500 companies in San Diego; the level of scholarship among our faculty is impressive to those organizations who may want to support the continuing education of their employees.  This newsletter can be a powerful marketing tool. Finally, the Newsletter will be an important document for our accreditation reviewers who have a great deal of interest in how research is supported and produced at the university.

Thank you for all your efforts and congratulations on your successes.  I also commend the Research Council for compiling and distributing this valuable information.
