Spring 2007 Grants Update for the National University Academics
By Darla Calvet
Newly-Awarded Grants:
This year started off on a positive note when Joan Sebastian and Joy Kutaka-Kennedy were awarded an $800,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the recruitment and training of Special Education teachers. This grant will be run in both northern and southern California, and we anticipate very high levels of success with its exceptionally qualified faculty directors. Congratulations are also in order to Drs. Gwen Stowers and Paul Majkut for being awarded Fulbright Scholars grants through the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Cultural Exchange.
Both faculty members will be excellent representatives for National University as international scholars. Recently, Anne Choi, an Assistant Professor in the College of Letters and Sciences, received an archiving grant for social services materials through the University of Minnesota. The National University community commends these faculty on their excellence in grant achievement during the first quarter of 2007. Currently, the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research has over $8,000,000 in federally-funded grants and contracts.
Grant Staffing Support for Faculty:
A new support team is available for faculty and staff in the National University System who wish to plan, pursue and/or implement grants. This team consists of Dr. Darla A. Calvet, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Development, Michelle Hills, CGFM, Director of Grants and Contracts, and Deanna Vanwey, Grant Writer for the National University System. Please contact any team members with queries regarding potential and/or existing grant projects. We offer the following services: grant prospecting, planning, writing and editing, implementation, compliance, coaching, and evaluation services.
What's Ahead in 2007-2008
The recent conversion to a Democratic Congress means that more grant competitions will be available during the 2007-2008 year. In particular, Homeland Security and Critical Languages will be on the radar for Congress. Should you have a particular area of interest in higher education, please contact Dr. Calvet at x8594 for an update on congressional trends. Each day, our team receives federal updates from Capitol Hill and other public funding agencies. We can provide you with specific information on a grant or initiative that you may consider pursuing.
FAQ: How do I submit a grant on behalf of the National University System?
There is an approved process for grant submission through the National University System because 99 percent of grants are submitted electronically for the System through grants.gov. The first step is to advise your Dean and call Michelle Hills, the Director of Grants and Contracts at x8342 to discuss the project and obtain support. Next steps include project and budget approval and submission of the project on grants.gov., which can be facilitated by Michelle Hills.
