  4. Awards
As part of its $50 million initiative on Digital Media and Learning initiative launched last year (www.digitallearning.macfound.org), the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has just announced support for a $2 million open Digital Media and Learning Competition, with entries due on October 15, 2007.

All details about the competition and application requirements can be found at www.dmlcompetition.net. Awards will be made in two categories, Innovation Awards and Knowledge-Networking Awards.

Innovation Awards ($100,000 and $250,000) will support learning pioneers, entrepreneurs, and builders of new digital learning environments for formal and informal learning.

Knowledge-Networking Awards ($30,000-75,000) will support communicators in connecting, mobilizing, circulating or translating new ideas around digital media and learning.

The competition is administered by HASTAC ("haystack"---Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory), an innovative "Web 2.0" virtual institution of more than eighty institutes, centers, and community organizations anchored at the University of California Humanities Research Institute and the John Hope Franklin Center at Duke University.

Anyone can join the HASTAC network by registering on the website
(www.hastac.org) and contributing content and ideas, including podcasts, blogs, or collaborative opportunities.

There is also a forum entry about the competition at HASTAC's website: http://www.hastac.org/node/871

Developing Global Scientists and Engineers (International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) and Doctoral Dissertation Enhancement Projects (DDEP)

Funding Agency – National Science Foundation

CFDA Number: 47.075 – Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences

Funding Opportunity Number: 04-036

Anticipated Funding for FY 2008 and beyond: $2,000,000 to fund up to 14 IRES awards

Application/Proposal Due Date: February 15 (Annually) for IRES

The United States needs to educate a globally-engaged science and engineering workforce capable of performing in an international research environment in order to remain at the forefront of world science and technology. To support this aim, the Developing Global Scientists and Engineers program provides highest quality international research experiences for U.S. students. Whereas the International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) component of the program supports groups of U.S. undergraduate or graduate students conducting research abroad in collaboration with foreign investigators, the Doctoral Dissertation Enhancement Projects (DDEP) component supports the dissertation research abroad of one doctoral student in collaboration with a foreign investigator.

In addition to the activities described in this solicitation, the Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) supports other targeted international research and education experiences for early-career scientists and engineers via the Research Experience for Undergraduates program, the East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students, the Pan-American Advanced Studies Institutes (for advanced graduate students and post-doctoral fellows), and the International Research Fellowship Program (for post-doctoral fellows or new faculty). More information is provided below in Section IX. Other Programs of Interest.

Scholarly Editions Grants

Funding Agency – National Endowment for the Humanities

CFDA Number: 45.161 – Promotion of the Humanities Research

Funding Opportunity Number: 20071101-RQ

Awards are made for one to three years and normally range from $50,000 to $100,000 per year. The use of federal matching funds is encouraged. Federal matching funds are released on a 1:1 basis when a grantee secures gift funds from eligible third parties.

Application/Proposal Due Date: 11/01/07

Scholarly Editions Grants support the preparation by a team of at least two editors and staff of texts and documents that are currently inaccessible or available in inadequate editions. Projects involving significant literary, philosophical, and historical materials are typical in this grant program, but other types of work, such as musical notation, are also eligible. Applicants should demonstrate familiarity with the best practices recommended by the Association for Documentary Editing or the Modern Language Association Committee on Scholarly Editions. Editions produced with NEH support contain scholarly and critical apparatus appropriate to the subject matter and format of the edition. This usually means introductions and annotations that provide essential information about the form, transmission, and historical and intellectual context of the texts and documents involved. Proposals for editions of foreign language materials in the original language are eligible for funding, but proposals for editions of translated materials should be submitted to the Collaborative Research program. In keeping with the goals of the NEH Digital Humanities Initiative, the Scholarly Editions Program requires that applicants for online projects employ digital technology in the preparation and management of their critical and documentary editions. Online projects that include TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) conformant transcription and offer free access are encouraged and will be given preference over other online projects.
